Huntsman launches first MDI technology on one-component coatings for the construction industry

Keywords: Coatings technology

Specialists from Huntsman Polyurethanes have announced that they have created a new MDI technology to improve the performance of one-component, liquid membrane coatings for the construction industry.

Huntsman's 1K moisture-curing technology is reported to be the first product of its kind to meet market demand for an alternative to toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-based systems. The formula has been designed specifically for use in weatherproofing membranes for roofing, in total bridge decking systems and outdoor applications. It enables the development of one-component liquid coating solutions that cure by reacting to atmospheric moisture, forming a highly flexible coating that can be applied in 2-3 mm layers using simple pouring, brushing or spraying techniques. Benefits include superior hard-wearing properties and improved durability, plus longer open and faster cure times compared to TDI-based systems.

Marc Broekaert, application and product development manager of coatings, at Huntsman Polyurethanes' Adhesives, Coatings and Elastomers (ACE) division said, “Huntsman's MDI technology solution was developed in response to a strategic analysis of the construction market's coating requirements. Customers clearly highlighted that they were seeking an alternative for existing TDI polyurethane solutions for some specific construction applications. Using MDI technology, we have met market expectations and developed a polyurethane solution that offers crack-bridging properties in excess of 400 per cent elongation”.
