Waterborne and High Solids Coatings Conference – Brussels, March 2006

Over 160 delegates attended the PRA conference on Waterborne and High Solids Coatings, which was held at the Royal Crown Hotel, Brussels on 7-8 March 2006. About 30 papers were presented, covering a variety of topical subjects, including market activity data, innovative new polymers and additives, as well as new testing and characterisation procedures.

It was apparent that the driving force behind much of this activity is the VOC emission legislation affecting different markets around the world. In Europe specifically, pressure comes from the Solvent Emissions Directive becoming operational for industrial coating processes in October 2007 and the VOC Directive for decorative paints and vehicle finishing products being applicable from 1 January 2007, with tighter restrictions applying from January 2010.

However, according to two useful papers, which covered factory application in the furniture and metal- working industries, it is apparent there is still a significant gap in performance and robustness in application of waterborne technologies, designed to replace the existing solventborne products.

The large investment required in new equipment as well R&D resources is a challenge for large organisations, and may be beyond the capabilities of some small operators. There is a case for partnerships of resin suppliers, paint companies, coatings applicators and equipment manufacturers, to work together to solve these practical problems on a faster timeline.

In conclusion, the organisers felt the conference was a considerable success for all involved and are planning to hold a similar event in 2008. The conference proceedings represent an excellent summary of the “state-of-the-art” authored by leading researchers in this important area. Copies of the proceedings, price £180 (PRA members £130), may be obtained by contacting Janet Saraty, Conference Administrator, Tel: +44 (0)20 8487 0811.
