Largest offshore living quarters completed In consafe-managed project

The largest living quarters yet constructed for the offshore oil and gas industry have been completed by Consafe Engineering Services in a joint venture with McNulty Offshore.

With over 8,000m2 of floor area, the innovative structure will be floated into the Caspian Sea this summer for installation at the heart of AGIP KCO's giant Kashagan field.

Graeme Baird, General Manager of Aberdeen-based Consafe, said: “Meeting the challenging environmental requirements, these are the most technically advanced quarters facilities anywhere and at least twice the size of the large complexes in the North Sea.”

There are extreme climatic conditions (-40C to + 40C) and high concentrations of lethal H2S gas requiring a particularly complex heating and ventilation system. The quarters also contain the very latest in wastewater treatment technology; ensuring only pure water is returned to the Caspian.

The 120 modules, fabricated by McNulty Offshore, range from 60 to 120m2 and the complex will accommodate up to 250 personnel.

Consafe has been responsible for design, procurement and project management, as well as the design of two ocean-going barges, built in the Middle East. These will be used to deliver the modules once the river and canal network is ice-free and then jacked up to elevate the modules on location.

Mr Baird said: “The overall technical complexity of the project required an innovative strategy. By using Consafe's modular-build approach, we were able to fabricate the barges and the modules in parallel and this shortened the assembly time at McNulty's quayside facility at South Shields.”

Consafe employs around 50 in Aberdeen and is part of the McNulty Group, owned by Zoom Developers (P) Ltd, a major and fast-growing Indian investment company with diverse interests.
