The Western European Market for Coatings for Plastics, 2nd edition

Information Research (IRL) is pleased to announce the publication of a second edition of its study, The Western European Market for Coatings for Plastics. Covering 16 countries in Western Europe, the report represents IRL's analysis of the market for coatings for plastics and has been developed to expand upon the information provided in the first edition. The Western European Market for Coatings for Plastics was estimated to be approximately 144,000 ton in 2006 and is expected to grow to approximately 163,700 ton by 2011, an equivalent of 2.5 per cent pa growth. The top four national markets, which comprise just under 78 per cent of the total volume of The Western European Market for Coatings for Plastics are shown in Table I.

Individually, virtually all regions are expected to display levels of growth with the exception of the UK and Ireland which is expected to contract. This is thought to be because of the reduction in manufacturing in the region and the relocation of production sites to the Far East, China and Eastern Europe. The report gives a detailed account of this highly fragmented industry in terms of market share by sector and by technology as well as analysing the information from both sectoral and national perspectives. The breakdown of usage across Western Europe for coatings for plastics, according to IRL is shown in Table II.

Legislation will play a key role in the future of the sector with regard to the direction in which the coatings will be developed. REACH, SED, WEEE and ELV have all experienced further developments since the first edition of the report in 2004 and further serve to shape the decisions of research and development departments across Western Europe. Andrew Jackson, Analyst at IRL and author of the report said “The market is set for growth in the coming years, primarily due to the increasing use of plastics in the automotive and electronic sectors, and the increasing demand from the buying public for personalisation of these products in terms of touch and appearance. In particular, an area that shows signs of a promising future is that of UV-curable coatings. As yet it has not been widely embraced, but this should change in the future as these coatings are beginning to be used in preference to other technologies and once the range of colour additives and effects are broadened, then there should be rapid growth in the uptake of this coating method.”
