Flame Seal-TB receives industry’s first ICC approval for 15-min. Fire barrier paint for SPF insulation

Article Type: Environment and safety From: Pigment & Resin Technology, Volume 38, Issue 5

Flame Seal Products, Inc. and Specialty Products, Inc. (SPI) announce that Flame Seal-TB™, a spray-applied fire retardant paint, received the industry’s first and only International Code Council (ICC) approval as an alternative to a 15-min thermal barrier for spray polyurethane foam insulation.

This is not the first time Flame Seal Products, Inc. has led the way with innovative fire retardant coating technology. Flame Seal-TB™ catapulted forward in the industry one year ago as the only 15-min thermal barrier paint to successfully pass the UL-1715 room corner fire test. This test is considered by many experts to be one of the industry’s toughest full scale fire tests to pass. Intertek Warnock Hersey, the largest US independent testing lab, certified FS-TB™ as a: “Fire Retardant Coating, for use as a Thermal Barrier and/or Ignition Barrier on Spray Applied Polyurethane Foam.”

Mike Kiser, president of Flame Seal Products, Inc., said this after passing the test: “Our intention was to accomplish what no one else has been able to do and set Flame Seal-TB™ apart from other products.”

National building code organizations require the use of a 15-min thermal barrier over insulation used in walls and ceilings. These building codes are being more strictly enforced, requiring builders, architects, engineers, and spray foam applicators to find legitimate options to be in compliance with these codes.

SPI of Lakewood, Washington is proud to be a part of this groundbreaking event as the exclusive distributor of Flame Seal-TB™. SPI, a 35-year manufacturer and distributor of spray polyurethane foam and polyurea elastomeric coatings, recognizes this development as a significant advancement for the Spray Polyurethane Foam Industry.

Dan Helton, President of SPI, had this to say about the recent ICC certification: “Receiving ICC approval is a big deal in our industry. This only further illustrates Flame Seal-TB’s™ transparent credentials.”

Flame Seal-TB™ is eco-friendly and compliant with FDA/USDA for incidental food contact. The ultra thin-film intumescent paint can be applied with commercial airless spray equipment. This provides substantial labor savings compared to other types of thermal and ignition barrier products, and gives the building owner an aesthetically pleasing form of fire protection.

The ICC evaluation report (ESR-2072) reviewed Flame Seal-TB™ and Bayseal™ CC insulation. This in-depth ICC report addresses all major code jurisdictions including compliance with 2006 IBC, 2006 IRC, 2006 IECC, 1999 BNBC, 1999 SBC, and 1997 UBC codes. The ICC report and other product documentation can be downloaded online at Specialty Product’s web site.
