Ceresana analyzes the global growth market urea

Be it as a fertilizer, in cosmetics or medical products – urea is a highly versatile material manufactured in large quantities. The market study institute Ceresana forecasts revenues in the worldwide urea market to increase at dynamic growth rates to around US$96 billion in 2019.

Intensive and innovative application

As the world’s population continues to grow rapidly, so does the demand for food. At the same time, less and less land is made arable – hence, intensity of cultivation has to be increased. Urea is an effective fertilizer to improve yields and thus will become even more important in the future. Ceresana expects the use of urea to increase at an AAGR of 3.2 percent during the next eight years, with the emerging and developing countries being the main motor for growth in the agricultural applications. Reasons for this can be found in the growth of population and a more intensive cultivation of arable land.

This worldwide most comprehensive report analyzes and illustrates descriptively how the use of urea in agriculture on one hand and in industry on the other will develop. A large part of urea consumption takes place in agriculture, where it is used as fertilizer. Industry mainly utilizes urea for producing formaldehyde resins and melamine. Innovative field of application with dynamic growth rates is the reduction of nitrogen by the use of the urea solution AdBlue, which is predominantly used in utility vehicles in Western Europe. Given the increased application of AdBlue in industrialized countries, these countries are likely to increase their urea demand in the following years.

Markets in the East

Asia-Pacific already is the largest sales market for urea, accounting for almost two-thirds of total demand, followed by North America. In the next eight years, Asia-Pacific will gain additional market shares. Market researchers at Ceresana expect populous countries such as China and India to expand their position in the worldwide urea market. “Changes in regional demand will also have an effect on the production structure of manufacturers. Worldwide urea capacities of currently 184 million tonnes are likely to be expanded by about 71 million tonnes until 2019”, explains Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana. More than 50 percent of these new capacities will be built in the Asia-Pacific region. Another major producing region is the Middle East, due to a number of natural gas resources that offer ideal conditions for production.

The study in brief

Chapter 1 is a short and concise overview of the most important information on the different types of urea, its production, characteristics, raw materials, application areas, environmental and health aspects as well as the legal situation.

Chapter 2 provides a presentation and analysis of the urea market – including forecasts up to 2019: demand, revenues, and production are explained in detail. Moreover, you will gain insight into the development of individual regions and global market dynamics.

In Chapter 3, 33 countries are analyzed in detail: urea demand, revenues, production, as well as imports and exports during past eight years given. In addition, this chapter provides forecasts up to 2019 on urea demand, revenues, production, imports, and exports.

Chapter 4 offers a useful directory of producers covering the most important producers, clearly arranged according to contact details, turnover, profit, product range, production sites, profile summary, and product base. Detailed profiles are presented for 112 producers; such as Agrium, Inc, Agrofert Holding, a.s., China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), CF Industries, EuroChem, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Koch Fertilizer, LLC, Ostchem Holding AG, PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja (Pusri), Qatar Fertiliser Company (SAQ) (QAFCO), Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC), Shanxi Jincheng Anthracite Coal Mining Group Co., Ltd, SINOPEC Corp., Yara International ASA, and Zaklady Azotowe Pulawy SA.

Popular plastic: Ceresana updates report on the global polypropylene market

Polypropylene is one of the most versatile plastics. A broad range of products of day to day life is made from this polyolefin. Ceresana expects a dynamic growth of worldwide revenues generated with this second most important plastic to amount to more than US$145 billion in 2019. Especially the dynamic economic development in emerging markets will continue to boost demand for polypropylene (PP). The average annual growth rate of 4.4 percent in the last eight years is likely to be surpassed in the future, as is explained exhaustively in the market study recently published.

Asia-Pacific on the rise

Asian-Pacific countries already account for more than half of worldwide PP consumption. Thus, this region is the most important sales market, followed by Western Europe and North America. Yet distribution of demand for PP in the various regions of the world is likely to change notably. The analysts from Ceresana expect countries in Asia-Pacific to increase their shares in the global PP market – mainly at the expense of saturated markets in industrialized countries. Many emerging and developing countries benefit from an increasing demand in all application areas – above all in the transportation and automotives industry. Demand for light weight, fuel-efficient vehicles is increasing all over the globe. Therefore, the automobile industry substitutes a rising number of parts made from metal or rubber for weight-saving plastics.

Changes in regional demand will also have an effect on the production structure of manufacturers. The global PP capacity of about 62 million is likely to be increased by more than 23.5 million tonnes by 2019. More than 57 percent of these new capacities will be built in the Asian-Pacific region.

Packaging most important market sector

Major consumers of PP are producers of flexible and rigid packaging, who accounted for an aggregated demand of more than 50 percent in 2011. Fibers made from PP as well as consumer good reached a share of around 12 percent each. Also, the sectors electrics and electronics as well as the transportation and construction industry consumed a notable share of global PP demand with around 6 percent each. Among other application areas are, for example, medical products such as single-use syringes, petri dishes, diagnostic devices and catheter. Decorative ribbons, corrugated cardboard, and security foils for banknotes are partially made from PP. The most comprehensive report worldwide analyzes how PP use will develop in individual sales markets.

For the following eight years, major increase in demand at 5.8 percent per year is expected for the transportation industry. At the other end of the spectrum is fibers with an AAGR of 2.8 percent only; the by far major application area will, however, remain the sector flexible and rigid packaging, albeit with significant regional and country-specific differences.

The study in brief

Chapter 1 is a concise overview of the different production methods and processing techniques of PP. In addition, this chapter provides the most important information on PP’s characteristics, application areas, recycling possibilities, disposal options and legal situation.

Chapter 2 is a presentation and analysis of the global PP market. It provides in-depth analyses on demand, production and capacities, as well as revenue and price development. Moreover, you will gain insight into the development of individual regions and global market dynamics.

Chapter 3, 30 countries are analyzed in detail: PP demand, revenues, production, and imports and exports during past eight years are described. In addition, this chapter provides forecasts up to 2019. Attention is also given to the production capacities of various countries and how these capacities are to be expanded in the future.

Chapter 4 The application areas of PP, for example flexible and rigid packaging, fibers, automotive industry, electrics and electronics, consumer goods, construction industry and other application areas are analyzed thoroughly. Data on demand development, split by Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, South America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa as well as consumption figures for specific regions will be given.

Chapter 5 is a useful list of producers that provides profiles of PP manufacturers – clearly arranged according to contact details, turnover, profit, product range, production sites, profile summary, and capacities. Detailed profiles are given for 117 producers, for example Sinopec Corp., LyondellBasell Industries NV, Braskem SA, China National Petroleum Corp., Total SA, Saudi Basic Industries Corp., Reliance Industries, Ltd, Borealis AG, Ineos Group, Ltd, and Exxon Mobil Corp.
