Scope: Higher education has a central role in addressing the key challenges of social, economic and environmental sustainability. To achieve this transformation higher education institutions have to identify not only what to give increased focus to in their curriculum, research, operations and engagement with community and businessbut also how to ensure that desired changes are effectively and sustainably implemented. Importantly, to enact this new agenda, universities and colleges need to work in collaboration and across institutional boundaries in order to optimise the quality of what is undertaken and to identify ways to enhance other initiatives.
The COPERNICUS Charta 2.0, referring to Universities, states: ‘‘To be more effective they need to enhance their individual capabilities by effective cooperation: between disciplines and generations, between theory and practice and between devoted institutions. Together they should contribute to the ‘learning society’ we need to measure up to all the challenges.’’
A key challenge in transforming the role of higher education in curriculum, research, operations and the region is to address the interlaced challenges of social, economic, cultural and environmental sustainability, involving the need to shift away from a single disciplinary focus to one which is more transdisciplinary/interdisciplinary. Sustainability-oriented management, governance, leadership and policies are key to this transformation.
In this special issue we invite those active in addressing the above challenges and who have identified effective approaches to submit papers on how these challenges have been productively addressed. Issues to be addressed in papers could include, but are not limited to:

Management and governance systems in higher education which have successfully given sustainability a more central role in universities and colleges.
- •
Effective higher education change processes towards sustainability.
- •
New paradigms of higher education development towards sustainability.
- •
Senior leadership towards sustainable higher education development.
- •
Successful strategies for engaging the senior executive and governing bodies of universities in giving sustainability a strategic focus in their university.
- •
The effective implementation of national and international policy and education for sustainable development in universities.
- •
The role of university accounting, tracking, reporting and planning systems in limiting or developing sustainability practices in universities.
- •
The productive engagement of stakeholders in university governance and management as an embedded approach to sustainability in universities and colleges.
- •
The role of Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs) in strengthening the sustainability performance of universities.
- •
Case studies of successful transdisciplinary approaches of education, research and management in higher education.
- •
Case studies which demonstrate the importance of universities in the institutional and regional transformation to sustainable development.
- •
Case studies on the involvement of academics and students in addressing university operational sustainability issues and solutions.

The aim of the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal is to find practical and policy solutions to improve the social and environmental sustainability performance of (private, public sector and non-governmental) organizations and societies. The Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal provides a forum for quality research contributions with practice and policy implications concerning the interactions between social and environmental sustainability, accounting, management and policy. The contributions will be drawn from differing socio-economic and political environments with an international, national or organisation specific analysis taking a single, inter- or multi-disciplinary perspective..
