Purpose – to explore how the purported flattening of global competition is creating new challenges for managers. Design/methodology/approach – highlights how Thomas Friedman’s book “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century” spells out how only those companies that embrace globalization will thrive. Adopting the analogy of the flattened landscape, described by Friedman in his book, and drawing on Sebastian Junger’s “The perfect storm: a true story of men against the sea”, provides a framework for examining the factors that result in a perfect “storm” of globalization. Discusses those events that have affected the flattening of the world’s economy – environmental flatteners; intra-organizational flatteners and inter-organizational flatteners and identifies the proactive responses to these global flatteners. Looks at the potential threats and opportunities that may result from the “storm” of globalization; presents a programme of responses to global flattening that include, among other things, developing a nimble global orientation to govern the organizational structure. Research limitations/implications – managers must be creative and innovative in their responses to globalization; expand on suggestions to provide a comprehensive programme of preparedness to respond to the impact of global flatteners. Originality/value – presents some guidelines on how mangers can be more prepared for a flattened world. ISSN: 0090-2616 Reference: 35AU273
