Highlights the amount of information that companies are compiling about people based on their use of the internet. Discusses the concerns that are being raised about how this information is being used and the calls that action should be taken to improve online privacy. Quotes from those who believe that more regulation is needed and those who believe that people are sufficiently able to protect themselves. Reviews the campaigns to give individuals more control over how their information is used but points out that this might harm online providers’ ability to generate advertising income. Briefly reviews the outcry surrounding Facebook’s and Google’s decisions to place users’ personal information in the public domain but points out that there is a less well known threat to privacy posed by cookies that are placed on people’s computers and which monitor their use of the Internet. Also discusses the extent to which networks share information. Forecasts that the amount of personal information being made available will increase and considers how the situation may be regulated in Europe and the USA.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 0307-1766Reference: 39AX162
