Reports how companies and organizations of all sizes are facing growing pressure to minimize energy use, greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) emissions, and consumption of water and other scarce commodities and natural resources to evolve into more sustainable business practices. Argues that reducing energy use and operating more sustainably has the potential to lead to cost savings, while sustainable businesses can also strengthen brands. Focuses on the role of ICT in achieving these sustainability goals, noting that chief information officers (CIOs) that aspire to leadership in sustainability should start by putting their own house in order. Argues that the sustainability management market is still in its infancy, since no software vendor or solution provider has a mature set of offerings. Concludes that CIOs need to recognize that a number of factors will need to be brought together if success is to be assured.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1324-5945Reference: 39BB162
