Designing Dynamic Organizations: A Hands-on Guide for Leaders at All Levels

Jay Galbraith, Diane Downey and Amy KatesAmerican Management AssociationNew York, NY2001$27.95279 pages

This book is a clear, comprehensive and succinct guide to changing your organization. The authors cover many issues that are often overlooked or ignored. These include:

  • how to know that your organization needs changing;

  • matching your organization to your strategy;

  • how to find out from people within your organization what needs changing; and

  • matching compensation structures to the purposes of your organization.

It is full of checklists, questions that should be asked, and charts that simplify the process. The authors – a professor and two consultants – have covered completely what you need to know, without any padding.

If you are an external or internal consultant involved with organization design, it will be worth your time to read the book now. If you are a senior manager, wait until you are having organizational troubles, then have a junior manager read it and brief you on the parts that apply to your needs (then skim through the book to make sure nothing was missed). If you are that junior manager, pay attention when you get the assignment. You might even become a hero (or heroine) if you suggest the book yourself when the need arises.
