The Micropulse magnetostrictive linear transducers from Balluff-MultiSwitch are now available with integrated Profibus-DP (see Plate 2).

These transducers allow simultaneous processing of up to four positions and their respective velocities. The maximum cycle time for data transmission is 1ms. At a resolution of 5 µm (1µm for the high performance transducer) for position and 0.1mm/s for velocity, these transducers can be used for high-precision positioning tasks. Programmable parameters, such as resolution, zero point and working range, are modified over the BUS using the GSD file. Automatic baud rate detection by the transducer assures trouble-free start-up in Profibus systems with baud rates between 9.6kbps and 12Mbps. Addresses are assigned using DIP switches or can be configured through software.
To keep installation time and wiring costs to a minimum, three connectors are provided for the transducer electrical connections. Both BUS lines can be connected using standard Profibus cable with moulded-in connector or using user-assembled connectors. The supply voltage (24V) for the transducer is provided separately via an M8 connector.
