Skills shortages

The Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) annual skills shortage survey has revealed that 77 per cent of respondents had problems recruiting during 2006. The sample consisted of 623 respondents across the UK, 96 percent of whom were members of the CIOB and currently working at management level within the built environment. The results support other data that there is a significant skills shortage in the UK construction industry. Of the respondents, 72 percent expected that demand for construction would increase over the coming year and that they would not be able to recruit enough skilled workers to meet it. 68 percent felt that the existing workforce was not sufficiently skilled. Meanwhile the first wave of graduates without a construction related degree have passed through the Chartered Institute of Building’s Graduate Diploma Programme (GDP). The programme has been established for graduates without construction-related degrees who are currently working within the construction industry. At the CIOB’s first graduation ceremony nine students were awarded certificates confirming their accomplishments.
