HumiSeal® announces significant investment in R&D facilities and services

Article Type: Industry news From: Soldering & Surface Mount Technology, Volume 21, Issue 3

HumiSeal®, has cemented its position as the driving force in conformal coatings by announcing a $1 million investment in its research and development capabilities. The company’s two laboratories based in Taunton, Massachusetts, USA and Camberley, Surrey, UK will help secure the ongoing development of next generation coating chemistries as well as strengthening the customer support offering.

As electronic circuits become smaller, faster, hotter, and, in many cases, lead free, the potential for compatibility issues to arise between conformal coatings and solder pastes and fluxes increases. There are many chemical processes involved from bare board manufacture, through SMT and wave solder assembly to conformal coating. All of these processes, combined with other possible forms of contamination, can lead to poor reliability of product in the field.

It is no surprise therefore, that many customers are turning to providers to offer solutions to these issues. HumiSeal’s new state-of-the-art laboratories are able to support and assist customers with the development of their product design by offering a series of tests to ensure compatibility of coating materials with other technologies used in the manufacture of PCBs such as fluxes, solder and solder resists, through the installation of additional humidity chambers and surface insulation resistance measurement equipment.

Thermal shock chambers enable HumiSeal to more closely model real life operating conditions and stresses to which coated assemblies will be exposed. A Q-UV weathering chamber enables HumiSeal to assist with predicting the operating life of assemblies exposed to the harshest external conditions, which, with the current drive towards reducing weight of assemblies making hermetic sealing less attractive, is of extreme importance in many segments.

In addition, HumiSeal has upgraded its suite of analytical and spectroscopic equipment to better enable it to assist customers in determining the root cause of reliability issues and field failures.
