This year has once again seen a high standard of papers from a diverse range of countries from around the globe. In addition to the usual contributions from countries with well-established gender research cultures, i.e. the UK, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, the Journal is attracting submissions from countries that are relatively new to the area of women in management, including the Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Malta, Malaysia, Oman, South Africa and Spain. This is extremely encouraging and clearly indicates that not only does the field of women in management continue to be a highly relevant area of research in the West and Australasia but also is a global phenomenon, regardless of culture and/or religion.

This diversification was well demonstrated in this year's ground breaking special double issue by Beverly Metcalfe and Marianne Afanassieva on the current research on gender, management and organizational analysis in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, which included contributions from researchers working in CEE states or involved in research projects in those regions. The issue brought together leading academics with a shared interest in gender, management and organization issues in transition contexts and provided a unique insight into the prevailing research on gender and management within CEE. It also highlighted the tensions and contradictions of “doing gender” and management in a transition context.

The coming volume will see another interesting double issue by Ronald Burke and Susan Vinnicombe OBE exploring Supporting Women's Career Advancement. The issue will contain the latest research findings from scholars who are well recognized in the field of investigating the factors limiting women's career advancement, providing an understanding of the individual and organizational factors required to overcome those factors.

This year has seen a change in the house style of the Journal, with a move to a slightly smaller size and the reaction to this change seems to be extremely popular. In addition, I was delighted to be awarded for a second time a “leading editor award” for the continued development of the Journal in a global context. The increasing standards and status of the Journal are a direct reflection of the time and effort given by the Editorial Board Members (EAB) and external reviewers, all of whom are actively supportive of the aims and work of the Journal. The speed and thoroughness of reviewers is exemplary and helps to maintain the high standard of publications and, although the EAB members undertake the bulk of the reviews, we increasing rely on other experts who specialize in growing areas of research in specific geographical locations, e.g. the Middle East.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the review process on behalf of myself, Emerald and contributors, with my personal thanks to: Fang Lee Cooke, Caroline Gatrell, Anne McBride, Lynn Martin, Sharon Mavin, Mark Neil, Azura Omar, Christina Reis and Jackie Switzer. I would also like to say a very sincere thank you to Ronald Burke, who unfortunately can not continue on the EAB, he will be greatly missed.

The coming year promises to see the continued success of the Journal, with increasing diversification of papers in global terms. The Journal's growth and success is reliant on your continued support and I would like to thank all our readers, contributors and EAB for their important contribution.

Thank you.

Sandra Fielden
