Vote for ICL

ICL SA (South Africa) has played a large part in ensuring the success of this year's general election in South Africa by helping the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to achieve its goal of registering all eligible voters.

ICL SA supplied 25,000 hand-held barcode scanners and has provided ongoing maintenance to the IEC's electoral officers. The officers have been using them to scan the ID document details of eligible voters. Voters are pre-registered with a voting card which is then verified against their ID document details on election day, to eliminate election fraud. The contract runs until mid-1999 and has encompassed a core training programme for IEC trainers.

ICL's PBSUs (Programmable Barcode Scanning Units) with integrated printers are assisting the IEC in establishing an electronic electoral roll for the first time and incorporating recent changes to the voting system. The main change will allow only South African citizens over the age of 18 years to vote in this election, in contrast to the 1994 election where any person resident in South Africa could vote.
