Unique attributes

The issue of sustainability in a higher education context is, to some extent, a rather recent theme. Current journals are either focusing on sustainable development per se, or on general higher education. There are no specific fully-refereed outlets to date, to disseminate the broad body of work and knowledge currently available on sustainability in a higher education context. International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (IJSHE) is therefore the first scholarly publication to specifically address the need for the dissemination of information on sustainability matters at higher education institutions. IJSHE will cater for:

• Papers: scientific descriptions of projects, experiments or pilot projects dealing with sustainability-related issues, management, curriculum greening, etc.
• Articles: short texts outlining approaches, methods or case studies in which institutional approaches to sustainability are described
• Book reviews: describing recent publication on the topic and on related matters
• News: items of general interest and matters of relevance to all readers
• Features: broader descriptions of facts, trends, phenomena or developments in the field. Features are prepared by leading specialists commissioned for each issue
• A balanced provision of information on matters of regional and international relevance will be provided

Key benefits

The journal will be the first one to specifically focus on the subject of sustainability and sustainable development at universities. Since over 600 universities worldwide have committed themselves towards sustainability by signing international agreements and convention such as the Bologna Charter, The Halifax Declaration, the Talloires Declaration and the Copernicus Charter for Sustainable Development (signed to date by over 240 European universities), this journal shall be of special interest to them. It shall be helpful to subscribers in that sense that:

• It provides up-to-date information on new developments and trends
• It reports on international experiences, especially from Europe and North America, but also from other parts of the world (e.g. Africa, Latin America, Asia, Oceania)
• It is a tool for the dissemination of reliable information
• It enables networking and information exchange on a global basis

Last but not least, the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education represents a step forward in the provision of a peer-reviewed journal, which may promote the work of the people working in the field, disseminating their work and their own institutions, on an international basis.

Key journal audience

The journal will be of special interest to higher education institutions and to those working on them. Target groups of the journal are:

• University administrators (e.g. Rectors, Vice-Chancellors, Presidents and Principals)
• Professors/Assistant Professors, Lecturers/Senior Lecturers and other members of staff (e.g. research fellows, research associates, adjuncts) working with environmental matters
• Staff working at estate departments and other members of staff (at universities and colleges) in charge of health and safety, water and electricity consumption and transport policies among others, will find the journal of interest
• Students are also among the groups the journal intends to reach

Coverage

Materials particularly suitable for the journal will deal with one or more of the following contents:

• Environmental management systems
• Sustainable development
• Curriculum greening
• Agenda 21
• Operational aspects of universities
• Energy, water, recycling, waste management
• Planning and design of campuses
• Environmental reports
• Environmental policies and action plans
• Staff and student initiatives

Other themes associated to the above or emerging ones will also be considered. It is envisaged that, thanks to its scope and contents, the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education will be not only interesting to people working in the academic sector, but also to practitioners, consultants and professional writers.
