The corrosion resistance of water-cooled rebar and CQ-cooled rebar was evaluated by atmospheric exposure (AE) and wet/dry cyclic accelerated corrosion tests (CCT). The electrochemical properties of the two rebar scales were researched using electrochemical tests, and their compositions and structure were examined using XRD, SEM and FT-IR.Findings - The corrosion tests showed that the corrosion resistance of CQ-cooled rebar was better than that of water-cooled rebar. The electrochemical tests indicated that the CQ-cooled rebar scale had a higher corrosion potential, a lower corrosion current density and a higher polarization resistance. The thickness of the scale was 56 µm for CQ-cooled rebar, and 29 µm for water-cooled rebar. The phase constitution of the two scales comprised Fe2O3, Fe3O4, 2FeO·SiO2 and FeO, but the mass ratio of Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 to 2FeO·SiO2 and FeO, called protective ability index of the scale (PAIS), changed from 0.45 for water-cooled rebar to 24 for CQ-cooled rebar.Originality/value - The results clarified the role of CQ-quenching in improving the corrosion resistance of water-cooled rebar, which was to generate thick and compact Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 layers over the rebar substrate, and retard the anodic dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. Article literatinetwork@emeraldinsight.com (Jie Sun, XingWei Zhang) Fri, 21 Jun 2013 00:00:00 +0100 Electrochemical investigation on atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel under different environmental parameters http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=0003-5599&volume=60&issue=4&articleid=17086607&show=abstract Abstract

Purpose - The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of different environmental parameters on the atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel and to evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of an atmospheric corrosion monitor (ACM).Design/methodology/approach - The experiment included outdoor exposure tests and laboratory simulation tests. The ACM was an electrochemical method that was adopted in order to research the effects of the environmental parameters on the atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel.Findings - The corrosion current of the ACM responded satisfactorily to the corrosion of carbon steel caused by different environmental factors, especially relative humidity. Sulphur dioxide can greatly accelerate the corrosion of carbon steel and the importance of sulphur dioxide is closely related to its concentration and the relative humidity. Copper-accelerated acetic acid salt solution is more aggressive than neutral salt solution, which may be due to sub acidity and copper ions in the former solution.Originality/value - Recently, the use of an ACM seems to have been overlooked in the research of atmospheric corrosion when other new methods arise, but in practical application it is a simple, direct and effective method, to which importance should be attached. This investigation further verified the feasibility and effectiveness of an ACM for use in monitoring atmospheric corrosion and exploring the relationship between corrosion rate and environmental parameters. The linear polarization technique was used to measure the corrosion rate of an X52-sample of pipeline steel in simulated solution containing SRB metabolic products species. The curves obtained from LPR data then were fitted using the multiple non-linear regression method by Minitab 15® software.Findings - Statistical analysis shows that sulphide and sulphite have significant effect on the corrosion rate of X52 pipeline steel.Originality/value - Using the abiotic chemistry approach, an empirical equation that considers SRB metabolic species has been developed. The equation could be used to predict rate of carbon steel corrosion by SRB.
