Leadership seems to be the new "rock n' roll". By that, I mean it seems to be the subject of every third new business book, and of many seminars. It seems as though management is "old hat"; we now all have to be leaders. Those leading on leadership often quote examples of exemplary leadership some company that has been particularly innovative or successful. But there are many examples of companies doing both via luck, via good management and by a host of other methods. I'm not decrying leadership, I just want to "put it in its place" as one contributing factor, only occasionally all-important (unless, of course, one subscribes to the view that its good leadership that draws good management, that good leaders are lucky … but that's a longer piece than this one! And I remind you of the words of Baltazar Gracian (1601-1658) … "Good things, when short, are twice as good.")
