The corrosion resistance of water-cooled rebar and CQ-cooled rebar was evaluated by atmospheric exposure (AE) and wet/dry cyclic accelerated corrosion tests (CCT). The electrochemical properties of the two rebar scales were researched using electrochemical tests, and their compositions and structure were examined using XRD, SEM and FT-IR. <B>Findings</B> – The corrosion tests showed that the corrosion resistance of CQ-cooled rebar was better than that of water-cooled rebar. The electrochemical tests indicated that the CQ-cooled rebar scale had a higher corrosion potential, a lower corrosion current density and a higher polarization resistance. The thickness of the scale was 56?<IT>µ</IT>m for CQ-cooled rebar, and 29?<IT>µ</IT>m for water-cooled rebar. The phase constitution of the two scales comprised Fe<DN>2</DN>O<DN>3</DN>, Fe<DN>3</DN>O<DN>4</DN>, 2FeO?·?SiO<DN>2</DN> and FeO, but the mass ratio of Fe<DN>2</DN>O<DN>3</DN> and Fe<DN>3</DN>O<DN>4</DN> to 2FeO?·?SiO<DN>2</DN> and FeO, called protective ability index of the scale (<IT>PAIS</IT>), changed from 0.45 for water-cooled rebar to 24 for CQ-cooled rebar. <B>Originality/value</B> – The results clarified the role of CQ-quenching in improving the corrosion resistance of water-cooled rebar, which was to generate thick and compact Fe<DN>3</DN>O<DN>4</DN> and Fe<DN>2</DN>O<DN>3</DN> layers over the rebar substrate, and retard the anodic dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. The corrosion rate of coupons in sea water injection systems reaches a maximum peak at a temperature of 50-60°C. The corrosion rate of coupons exposed in all three water samples increased with an increase in the dissolved oxygen concentration. When the mixed ratio of sea water and produced water and well water is 1:3:1 or 1:2:2, the corrosion rate of carbon steel is lower than is the case in pure water. The electrochemical mechanism of corrosion indicates that corrosion in the well water, produced water, and sea water samples were all controlled by the oxygen absorption process, which controlled the cathodic reaction. The corrosion rate of coupons followed the ranking order: well water; produced water; sea water. <B>Originality/value</B> – This paper provides the main corrosion product in the water injection system of the Chengdao Offshore Oil Field, and provides new information on the effect factors and mechanisms of corrosion on the offshore oil field. Article literatinetwork@emeraldinsight.com (Jie Sun, XingWei Zhang) Fri, 21 Jun 2013 00:00:00 +0100 Electrochemical investigation on atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel under different environmental parameters http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=0003-5599&volume=60&issue=4&articleid=17090199&show=abstract http://www.emeraldinsight.com/10.1108/ACMM-Apr-2012-1170 <strong>Abstract</strong><br /><br /><B>Purpose</B> – The aims are to investigate the influence of different environmental parameters on atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel and to further emphasize the feasibility and importance of atmospheric corrosion monitor (ACM). <B>Design/methodology/approach</B> – The experiment includes outdoor exposure test and laboratory simulation test. ACM as an electrochemical method was adopted in order to research the effects of the environmental parameters on the atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel. <B>Findings</B> – The corrosion current of ACM can respond satisfactorily to the corrosion of carbon steel caused by different environmental factors, especially relative humidity. Sulfur dioxide can greatly accelerate the corrosion of carbon steel and the importance of sulfur dioxide is closely related to its concentration and relative humidity. Copper-accelerated acetic acid salt solution is more aggressive than neutral salt solution, which may be due to sub acidity and copper ion in the former solution. <B>Originality/value</B> – Recently, ACM seems to be ignored in the research of atmospheric corrosion when some new methods come up, but in practical applications it is a simple, direct and effective method that should be attached importance. This paper further verified the feasibility and effectiveness of ACM used in monitoring atmospheric corrosion and exploring the relationship between corrosion rate and environmental parameters. The curve obtained from LPR data was then fitted using multiple non-linear regression method by Minitab 15<UP>®</UP> software. <B>Findings</B> – Statistical analysis shows that sulphide and sulphite have significant effect on the X52 corrosion rate. <B>Originality/value</B> – Using abiotic chemistry approach, an empirical equation that considers SRB metabolic species has been developed. The equation could be used to predict carbon steel corrosion rate by SRB. Article literatinetwork@emeraldinsight.com (M.C. Fatah, M.C.
