Cycling and Sustainability – New book explores the need for a revolution in cycle use

First volume in a new book series from Emerald Group Publishing on Transport and Sustainability

Cycling and Sustainability Book

United Kingdom, June 2012 – With four million of us using a car to travel less than three miles to work, there is a growing call to find alternative, sustainable forms of transport to reduce carbon levels and congestion on the roads. With Green Transport Week starting on the 16th June to raise awareness of the alternatives to the car, Emerald Group Publishing is delighted to announce the publication of Cycling and Sustainability, the first volume in a new book series launching in 2012 which explores the difficulties in making cycling mainstream in many cultures, despite its claims for being one of the most sustainable forms of transport.

Cycling and Sustainability explores cycling in all its variety and richness, and considers the nexus between cycling and the three pillars of sustainability - society, the environment and economics. Containing valuable contributions by leading researchers, the book provides a comprehensive view of recent research on the role of cycling as a means of everyday travel with multi-disciplinary contributions covering seventeen countries, both developed and developing, including the USA, UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, China, Brazil, India and South Africa.

Volume  editor John Parkin of the Department of Urban Engineering, London South Bank University, comments: “It is illuminating and instructive to consider the relationship between human powered locomotion and the so-called pillars of sustainability in more detail: What is the relationship between society and cycling? What are the transactions between cycling and the environment? What are the relevant factors for economic analysis? We explore these questions with the assistance of authors from around the globe who are sociologists, ethnographers, historians, planners, geographers, psychologists, economists, engineers and transport modellers. The benefit of bringing their subject expertise to bear on transport, and cycling in particular, provides a rich and mixed picture of the changing trajectory of the fortunes of cycling.”

Cycling and Sustainability is published as Volume 1 of the Transport and Sustainability book series published by Emerald Group Publishing.  This new book series will cover a wide range of issues relating to transport, its impact in economic, social and environmental spheres, and its interaction with other policy sectors.
