The objective of this series is to provide new research on important emerging technologies in higher education, including both teaching and administrative applications from a variety of methodological approaches. The series encompasses both theoretical and empirical developments and provides evidence from a range of disciplines throughout the world. It seeks to reflect on and shape current higher educational policies and practices regarding new technologies.
The ability to identify and exploit new technologies in higher education is increasingly important as competitive and cost factors are impacted in an increasingly globalized arena. Today’s learners are digital natives who thrive in technologically mediated environments and interfaces. Organizations in the second decade of the 21st century are increasingly flat without the top-down hierarchical command and control structure of the past. Per force, they require staff who are adept in new modes of technology-supported collaboration. This series endeavors to assist higher educational institutions in staying on the cutting-edge of technological innovation.
A wide range of issues and perspectives are covered by this series, including determining criteria for technology selection, technology deployment, and assessment. The range of academic disciplines represented includes business, arts, science, and education. The range of higher educational administrative areas includes enrollment management, alumni relations, counseling, student affairs, career centers, information technology experts, and human resource management.
The series is aimed at faculty members and administrators in higher education. It is foreseen that this information will be useful to educators in corporate universities, the military, and other organizations involved in training and development.
Volume 6 comprises of seven key books on the topic of ‘Increasing Student Engagement’ These titles provide international coverage on the subject with a variety of practical applications and how they can be used in real settings by students and teachers.
Volume 6A - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Online Learning Activities: Wikis, Blogs and Webquests
This volume examines how these technologies are being used to improve writing and publishing skills, student subject awareness, and literacy create engaging communities of practice, and as experiential learning tools. Chapters address the use of wikis and blogs to enhance student engagement by creating a community of practice around a course, using blogs to increase off-campus student engagement and rethinking WebQuests in second language teacher education.
Volume 6B - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Social Technologies: Facebook, E-Portfolios and Other Social Networking Services
Examines how these social media technologies are being used for e-Mentoring and constructing online reputations. The authors discuss applying positive psychology and cognitive styles in user design, designing outcome based curricula using student personality types, engaging second language students through electronic writing tasks and using social media to motivate students to take charge of their own learning processes, and creatively using technology to enhance teacher education.
Volume 6C - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Immersive Interfaces: Virtual Worlds, Gaming, and Simulation
Addresses how gaming, simulation, and virtualization are being used to improve teamwork and leadership skills in students, learning tools to create inter-cultural, multi-perspective, and global experiences. Chapters include how to increase learner engagement using serious games, enhancing leadership skills through virtual simulation, using online video simulation for educational leadership, using augmented reality in education and utilizing the virtual learning environment to encourage faculty reflection.
Volume 6D - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Mobile Applications Smartphones, Skype and Texting Technologies
Reviews new research on how mobile technologies are being used in higher education to increase learner engagement in an epoch of increasing globalization and diversity. These enabling technologies are reshaping and reframing the practice of teaching and learning in higher education. This volume will examine how mobile technologies are being used to improve teamwork and leadership skills in students, and how these technologies are being used to create inter-cultural and global experiences.
Volume 6E - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Classroom Technologies Classroom Response Systems and Mediated Discourse Technologies
Through case studies, surveys, and literature reviews, this volume will examine how classroom response systems are being used to improve collaboration and interactivity between students, to create engaging social learning communities in the classroom, and how these technologies are being used to create more meaningful and authentic learning experiences.
Volume 6F - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention Using Multimedia Technologies: Video Annotation, Multimedia Applications, Videoconferencing and Transmedia Storytelling
Examines new research on how videoconferencing, video annotation, video mapping, and related technologies are being used in higher education to improve writing/publishing skills, academic literacies in students, and create engaging communities of practice through digital storytelling, narratives, and inter-culturalism.
Volume 6G - Increasing Student Engagement and Retention in E-Learning Environments: Web 2.0 and Blended Learning Technologies
Looks at how online and blended learning technologies are being used in higher education improve academic literacies in students, and how these technologies are being used to improve motivation and self-empower learners.
Volume 5 - Misbehavior Online in Higher Education
This book is rich in contemporary case studies, analytical reports, and up-to-date research providing detailed overviews of various misbehavior, including cyberbullying, cyberstaling, cyberslacking, and privacy invasion, hacking, cheating, teasing, and enhanced prejudicial attitudes. The development of approaches to addressing these problems is discussed and examples are provided. The book also anticipates emerging problematic behavior and the development of new policies, programs, facilities, and technologies to tackle the concerning behaviors is explored.

Dr. Charles Wankel
Professor of Management at St. John's University's Tobin College of Business
Charles received his doctorate from New York University. He currently serves the Rotterdam School of Management as a dissertation committee member and honorary posts include Vice Rector of the Poznań University of Business. He has edited or authored more than 30 books, including the American Library Association’s Outstanding Reference Source of 2009 Award-winning Encyclopedia of Business in Today’s World (SAGE Publications). Other recent volumes include Higher Education in Virtual Worlds, Alleviating Poverty through Business Strategy (Palgrave Macmillan), and Management Education for Global Sustainability (Information Age Publishing). Recent journal publications include “Management Education Using Social Media” (Organization Management Journal). He has been the recipient of top awards for best paper, service and technology from the Academy of Management, the premier scholarly society for his discipline. He has been a visiting researcher and lecturer in many nations, including as a Fulbright Fellow, and with support from the United Nations Development Program and the Open Society Fund. He has developed training programs for thousands of Fortune 50 company managers, including ones for IBM Learning Services and McDonald's Corporation, and executive programs for Columbia University School of Business, and in the oil industry in Siberia.
