Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an observer application for a squirrel cage induction motor, which is a complex non‐linear system with parameter variations.

Design/methodology/approach

Proposes a non‐linear observer with a great profit to follow up in real time the flux and rotor resistance of a squirrel cage induction motor.

Findings

The robustness of induction motors encourages their use in the industry. But, to assure a reliable working and to detect probable breakdowns, it is necessary to control some important parameters in real time. The Park model of induction motors is non‐linear. The results of the different simulations are presented in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

Originality/value

Provides information on an effective industrial application.
