The licensing and launch of high‐speed mobile telecommunications networks in Europe

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the licensing and launch of high‐speed mobile telecommunications networks in Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based upon data collection from multiple sources, triple cross‐checked, on licensing and launch dates and other relevant information.

Findings

A series of tables are presented covering a variety of relevant data such as licence and launch dates, megahertz awarded, number of licensees and methods of awards.

Research limitations/implications

Despite triple‐checking, some uncertainties remain about the precise numbers in a limited number of cases.

Originality/value

No one has ever conducted a detailed investigation of this kind before.
