“Damned if you do, damned if you do not”

Article Type: Literature and insights From: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Volume 26, Issue 6

We’re told “send an article to a ‘top’ tier journal”

But, after waiting for nearly a year it is rejected.

Sometimes if you are lucky you will be allowed to resubmit

But you’re damned if you will because then you have to wait again!

At last, a reply,

“The changes made were too insignificant to warrant publication”

So it’s back to the drawing board!

You must publish in a top tier journal

You are damned if you don’t

Because it will affect your career

Because you will not be viewed favourably by your masters

Because you will not get conference funding

Because you will not be promoted

Because you will be trapped in your job!

Academics are torn by this publishing pressure.

Regardless of how good your manuscript is

If it cannot get published in the “right” sort of journal

It is not valued,

You are not valued,

But maybe it is time to re-evaluate what is the true value of research,

Maybe it is time to reassess the true value of “top tier” journals!
