Racal and National Air Traffic Services (NATS) are making satellite navigation technology a reality with the prototype satellite navigation system known as the Northern European Satellite Test Bed (NEST BED). NEST BED is a first step towards the implementation of an operational European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) and is investigating the performance of Wide-Area Differential GPS (WADGPS) through data collection and performance analysis. The NEST BED will support EGNOS, being developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), supported by the European Commission, Eurocontrol and European CAAs. NEST BED has been commissioned and flight demonstrations are being conducted at Farnborough '98, with a real-time display on the Racal and NATS stands. A BAC 1-11 will be making approaches to Boscombe Down using the NEST BED.

Racal expects to play a key role in the development of the EGNOS, particularly on RIMS, the Central Processing Function (CPF) and support for the EGNOS test bed. These activities, together with the operation of the NEST BED, will position Racal to lead key elements of the GNSS-2 (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) development.
