In GB Patent 2315723 Aerospatiale Société Nationale Industrielle describes a low vulnerability helicopter rotor blade. It has a spar member forming the leading edge of the blade which over most of its length is of box section. Its upper and lower portions are formed as a wide meshed lattice from strips of high strength fibres. The lattice bounds cells of low strength material which can rupture in the event of excess pressure in the box section to minimise damage to the spar member.
