It is believed that a new computer-aided system from Indentec saves eyestrain, error and operator inconsistency by dispensing with the need to measure Vickers hardness impressions through a conventional eyepiece.

Available as an option on the company's range of Vickers testers, the dedicated system consists of a special video camera in place of the eyepiece. The camera is linked to a PC with mouse-driven software, which projects the indentations onto a video monitor for "point-and-click" measurement of the diagonals.

The Stourbridge company says that, unlike other video options, the system can measure impressions reliably and accurately on routinely prepared surfaces.

Features available as optional extras include fully automatic measuring, real-time SPC on screen, case-depth calculation, motorized specimen positioning, auto focus and auto cycle start, and the measurement of visible features.
