Mitutoyo's 2D Geopak software will convert any of the company's optical projectors that has an X-Y output into an extremely powerful inspection tool, more akin to a co-ordinate measurement machine (CMM). In fact the 2D software has been developed from the 3D version that is used with Mitutoyo's range of CMMs.

In additional to linear and angular measurements, 2D Geopak allows users to determine PCDs, concentricity, roundness, straightness and true positioning. Data can be output in a variety of formats so that they may be analysed further, for example, with Mitutoyo's Statpak statistical process control (SPC) package.

A very useful feature is thought to be the way that datums can be set, avoiding the need to align the component on the measurement stage. For repetitive work, the part profile can be programmed so that the user is shown, via the computer screen, which point is to be measured next. A flashing green blip indicates the position and, after the user presses the data capture button on the foot switch, the blip on the screen turns to a steady amber to show that the data have been collected.

The next point then flashes green. If tolerances have been programmed as well, the user gets immediate feedback on whether or not the measurement is within tolerance. A blue portion of the screen shows information such as point identification, X-Y co-ordinates and measurements. 2D Geopak makes using an optical projector so simple that semi and unskilled operators can make accurate, reliable measurements very quickly and with minimal training.

To show what can be achieved with the 2D Geopak software, Mitutoyo has produced a new video and literature. The video runs for about ten minutes and follows through the procedure for programming profiles with the simple icon-driven system, then creating datums and taking measurements; a PJ300-series projector is used in the video, but any of Mitutoyo's projectors or microscopes with an X-Y output can be used. Also highlighted in the video is the fact that data can be automatically output to Statpak for analysis or review, and some of the complementary inspection equipment available from Mitutoyo is also shown.

Mitutoyo point out that having invested in an optical projector, it makes sense to gain the most from it. 2D Geopak allows users to increase productivity and makes it possible to use an optical projector with only minimal training. The software is ideal for all measuring regimes, from first-off inspections to in-process control sampling.
