Harness Software recently announced the first details of a contract with GKN Westland Helicopters of Yeovil, valued at around £400,000. The contract is for Capital H, Harness Software's tool for wire harness design, engineering and manufacture, and covers supply of standard software, implementation and customisation services.

GKN Westland will be using the software to replace its in-house developed system, and will deploy it across their EH101, Sea King and Lynx projects.

John Judkins, technical director at Harness Software said, "As aircraft become increasingly sophisticated, so the wiring needed to power and control their electrical systems becomes incredibly complex. Developing wire harnesses for aircraft and also for automotive applications has become a very time consuming part of developing new projects. Capital H is already in use at some of the biggest automotive wire harness manufacturing sites in Europe and can cut development and engineering time by as much as 80 per cent. We expect to be able to deliver significant time and cost savings to GKN Westland."

Capital H will be used to develop wire harness designs, and validate and optimise the production engineering and manufacturing functions. The system will interface with GKN Westland's SAP based ERP system and will drive its Vektronics laser marker.

Chris Toyne, GKN Westland's project manager explained "We conducted an extensive review of the available technology and were unable to identify any other company who combined the advanced technology and depth of understanding that characterised Harness Software's proposal".

Judkins continued, "We are very pleased to have been selected by GKN Westland. Aerospace companies have a very intense requirement for electrical development and engineering skills and resource. GKN Westland has a fantastic reputation and asked us to undergo a very extensive quality assurance audit in order to meet their exacting standards. We are looking forward to meeting their challenge and delivering substantial efficiencies in this area."
