Brookhouse Composites Ltd informs us that it has installed state-of-the-art ultrasonic equipment to allow volumetric inspection of composite components produced at its Darwen factory.

The new equipment, from Meccasonics, employs ultrasonic compression probes, using water coupling in a purpose-built tank, to examine composite carbon fibre components, 10-25mm thick, for the presence of inclusions and for delamination of carbon fibre layers. Online data are provided and every inspection is stored as a C-scan for off-line analysis and for tracking.

In the event of a defect being identified, further examination to establish its nature and size can be carried out using portable Panametrics NDT equipment.

Non-destructive examination is now performed on a wide range of plastic components and eventually the procedure will also be extended to composite tools.
