Carbide inserts for high alloy and stainless steels

Keywords: Widia Valenite, Carbides, Steel

Multi-layer coated carbide inserts designed for high performance turning of high-alloy steels, cast steel, and especially austenitic stainless steel, are announced by Milton Keynes-based Widia Valenite UK.

Designated TN8025, the multi-coating contains titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, aluminium oxide and zirconium carbonitride (Plate 3). With corresponding chip control geometries, the new grade is said to be just as effective for medium-duty turning operations as for soft or "gummy" steels, with or without cutting fluid. Castings, forgings and extrusions can reportedly be machined, just as easily as bar stock, in continuous or interrupted cuts for application groups M20 to M30. Another benefit claimed is low heat generation, achieved by finish grinding of the locating surfaces of the inserts after coating.
