The Boeing Company reports that it has lowered the 717.200's takeoff and landing weights, the company's giving, in opinion, the 100-seat airline a new level of competitive performance that translates into improved operating economics for airlines.

"We have essentially resized the aeroplane", said Rolf Seilge, director, 717 Product Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group.

Maximum take-off gross weight has decreased from 114,000lb (51,710kg) to maximum to 110,000lb (49,895kg) and maximum landing weight has declined from 102,000lb (46,265kg) to 100,000lb (45,359kg) – while increasing the aeroplane's original pre-flight test range by 50 nautical miles. "This was made possible by better aeroplane performance", Selige said.

The 717's fuel burn has declined 8 per cent from pre-flight test estimates, which equal 2,000lb (907kg) and its empty weight has dropped 1,450lb (658kg). Also, Boeing rules ware changed to more accurately reflect 717-types short-range missions, reducing the operator item weight by 1,200lb (544kg). Fuel saved from the lighter aeroplane has reportedly reduced another 550lb (249kg).
