Wing flap pivoting torsional connection

Wing flap pivoting torsional connectionKeywords: Eurocopter, Wings, Patents

In GB Patent 2348856 Eurocopter Deutschland GmbH describes a connecting means between a movable flap and a wing of an aircraft. It is a torsionally elastic and flexurally rigid cylindrical bar element on which axially spaced flat connecting areas are formed. These establish a connection to the wing and to the flap. Twisting of the bar sections thus allows the flap to pivot. The flat connecting areas may be large compared to the bar cross section and have a positional guide on the side opposite to the bonded face. The bar may be one piece fibre-composite element. Alternatively, the bar may be square or cross shaped in cross section. The connection does away with sliding bearings and so is free from play and affords good transfer of transverse and longitudinal forces that are brought about in particular by centrifugal forces at the blade of a helicopter.
