The Institute of Materials' Prain Medal and Prize has been awarded to Mr Richard Dawson, director of Columbia Metals Ltd. The award, which is sponsored by Copper Development Association, was presented by Mrs Angela Vessey, manager of Copper Development Association.

Richard Dawson has dedicated the whole of his successful working career to various aspects of the copper industry. His commitment began upon graduation from university with continual employment and involvement in the manufacture, development and supply of copper and its alloys for over 40 years.

With fellowships to the Materials, Welding and Quality Assurance Institutes to his name, Richard is both a highly acknowledged and well respected expert in the fields of joining technology, alloy development, processing and special fabrication.

Richard has published books, technical and educational literature and has also lectured on many facets of the copper industry. Other achievements include being a founder member and chairman of the British Association for Brazing and Soldering, the originator of an industry- based group concerned exclusively with the technical promotion of Aluminium Bronzes and playing a very significant part in ensuring efficient transition and guaranteed material supply to the new copper based Naval Engineering Standards.

Richard's experience is being utilised at present by continual involvement with both the Copper Aerospace Alloys and the New European Standards Committees keeping himself and his colleagues at the forefront of standardisation and technical developments. This participation has also assisted in the promotion of modern copper alloys specifications via company literature and the provision of technical advice to his customers. In recent years Richard's commitment to improving standards and subsequently the availability of copper and its alloys has provided an invaluable assistance for many individuals and the engineering industry. He has recently been promoted to a director of Columbia Metals Ltd, which is due recognition of his outstanding contribution to the copper industry.
