Corrosion problem solved

Keywords: Corrosion, Aircraft, Heat exchangers

A serious problem involving aircraft heat exchangers was solved recently by the adoption of a high performance epoxy coating form Indestructible Paint Ltd.

The problem, one of in-service corrosion, was caused by exposure to environmental humidity, salt and caustic air, resulting in significantly reduced operational time for the heat exchanger

The coating, Rockhard 961-450-002, was supplied by the company's US division, Indestructible Paint Inc of Windsor Locks, Connecticut. It replaces the existing coating on heat exchangers used on the Boeing 777.

During the successful evaluation tests 961- 450-002 was subjected to over 1,000 hours continuous exposure to salt fog on cross- scribed panels and sulphuric acid immersion for over 100 days.

This is said to be a typical application for Indestructible's Rockhard products, a wide range of epoxy coatings originally introduced over 30 years ago to protect the thin magnesium outer skins of Royal Navy helicopters. Rockhard coatings have been developed and improved continuously since that time, with many new additions to the range.

With literally hundreds of aerospace products available the company can supply anything from very small to large quantities of approved coatings at short notice.

Manufacturer of specialised airframe and aero engine coatings, Indestructible Paint Ltd., is based in Birmingham, UK.

The company includes Rolls-Royce, Sikorsky, the Royal Air Force, British Aerospace, GE and most major industry names amongst its customers.

It also has an interface with engine and component manufacturers in the UK, USA, Germany and countries developing their own technology such as India, South Africa and Israel.
