International Aerospace Corrosion Control Symposium, October 2002, Amsterdam

After a period of reflection following the events of September 11th, the next International Aerospace Corrosion Control Symposium is planned for 9th. to the 11th. October 2002 in Amsterdam. The delay has made the conference even more of a must go event for anyone operating in the field of aerospace corrosion, as the IACC series has always provided a unique meeting place for the exchange of information and ideas on the ever-challenging subject of aerospace corrosion.

Launched in 1988, the IACC bi-annual conferences quickly established a reputation for the high standard of papers and presenters, always selected by a steering committee of the best technical minds from around the world. As well as the exchange of ideas, information about new products and services for fixed wing and rotary fleets has always been welcome (evidence based, of course!) with a healthy balance of technical and commercial interests being catered for. To date, delegates from over 70 countries have attended, most involved in maintenance, engineering, R&D, quality control or safety, both commercial and military.

Previous years have seen presentations by organisations large and small, with quality and innovation being spread evenly across the spectrum. Apart from the major players, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, USAF, AKZO, British Airways and the like, important research, development and testing establishments have made significant contributions. These include the Institute for Aerospace Research, Canada, DERA (now QINETIQ), Federal Aviation Authority USA, Netherlands Aerospace Laboratory.

This year, for the first time, there will be an award for Best Paper, and two for Highly Commended. The winning paper will be published in Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology,' and the writer will receive a cash prize of £500, and a years free subscription to the journal. Winners of the Highly Commended prizes will receive £100.

Although papers only appear once at IACC events, a series sometimes starts to develop. For instance, whilst not of the same dramatic content as Godfather 1 and 2, North Sea Helicopter Operations – Does It Have To Mean Corrosion?' was updated two years later as North Sea Helicopter Operations – Does It Still Have To Mean Corrosion?' – and was still as relevant. We await this year's contribution with interest.

Not for the first time, Amsterdam was considered to be the ideal venue. Good facilities, easy to get around, but most important, excellent transport links allowing executives to minimise the cost and inconvenience of being away from their desks. The Radisson SAS dedicated conference area is modern and comfortable, with panoramic views over the city. The character and various delights of Amsterdam will add to the pleasure of the experience, no doubt, and although stories abound of canals and clubs encountered by various participants in previous years, the hotel bars and restaurants will satisfy most needs. Which is just as well, as most delegates seem to prefer talking with old friends and making new ones. The first night cocktail party starts bringing people together, and the special dinner the following evening is a chance to relax after the concentration needed during the day.

Even though the aerospace industry is having a difficult time, the people who work in this challenging field must come together. Financial constraints, paradoxically, often make their work even more important.

IACC 2002 will be an ideal setting.
