Avio Polska benefits from Vacu-Blast's “Vacu-Dapt” service

The Polish based aerospace company, Avio Polska (a subsidiary of Avio Italy), has recently benefited from the “Vacu- Dapt” surface treatment machine upgrade service operated by Vacu- Blast International (part of the ISPC Surface Preparation Group).

Earlier this year, Avio Polska took delivery of a Vacu-Blast shot peening machine, relocated from Italy and installed originally in 1979 by the then Alfa Romeo Avio (now Avio Italy). The installation of this machine followed the introduction of a new Vacu-Blast automatic steel shot peener in 2003 to process aeroengine compressor blade roots. The older machine was subsequently required in order to increase production, without having to invest in another new automatic peener.

However, following its installation, it was discovered that this machine could not meet the required peening specification (SNECMA “DMP28”). This is where the “Vacu-Dapt” service came to the rescue. The machine was upgraded on site and approved to the standard of the newer machine – within the short timescale of just five working days!

The work involved modifications to the pneumatic control system, a replacement media delivery system and the inclusion of continuous peening media flow monitoring, with automatic shutdown and nozzle indication should a flow fault be detected.

Vacu-Blast's “Vacu-Dapt” service was introduced specifically to ensure that older shot peening and abrasive blasting equipment is operating efficiently and complies with latest OEM specifications, as well as in line with current health and safety and other relevant Government and EU regulations governing production machinery. It offers detailed site inspection of equipment, followed by recalibration and adjustment, if necessary. Older electro-mechanical control systems can also be updated to PLC- or PC-based operation to optimise their accuracy and ensure precise process repeatability.
