Automatic surface finishing machine for processing cylindrical components

A new automatic dry blasting machine for the surface preparation and finishing of cylindrical and other rotationally symmetrical components, has been introduced by Vacu-Blast, part of the Wheelabrator Group.

The Vacu-Blast “Vantage 1500S” is a suction-fed machine, designed for medium to high output processing, where simple operation and easy component loading and unloading are the prime requirements. It can be used with all types of abrasive media, for applications such as deburring, plastics deflashing, scale removal, preparation for bonding, plating or coating, cosmetic finishing, and shot peening for fatigue enhancement. Typical user industries include aerospace, automotive and medical engineering.

To provide complete surface coverage, the machine utilises an array of four high-efficiency oscillating blast nozzles, which operate in conjunction with four rotating work stations or “satellites” incorporated into a main powered turntable. The blast nozzles are universally adjustable, and blast pressure, blast duration and component rotation speed are programmable to ensure process repeatability and consistency of finish. Because the machine has four workstations, four components are processed in turn on a continuous basis.

The blast cycle is initiated by two separated safety push-buttons and, at the end of the cycle, the component is air-washed and delivered to an unload/ load station for removal, enabling another part to be loaded. This is protected by flexible baffles to prevent the escape of blast media.

The “Vantage 1500S” has a processing envelope of 300 mm high × 220 mm diameter and a maximum component weight capacity of 12 kg. Overall machine dimensions are 1,800 mm wide × 2,700 mm deep × 2,400 mm high.

During the blast cycle, the machine's power-pack automatically separates out reusable media and recycles it to the nozzles. Degraded media, dust and debris are directed into a dust collector for safe disposal. This continuous in-cyde regrading and recycling process ensures a high-quality surface finish and minimises blast media consumption.

The Vacu-Blast “Vantage 1500S” can process components made from steel, aluminium, high strength alloys, brass, copper and most plastics. Titanium and other potentially hazardous materials can be processed with the incorporation of additional safeguards.

Noise level is 79 dB(A), measured in accordance with DIN 45635; this can be reduced to 75 dB(A) using optional noise reduction cladding. A number of other options are also available to suit special requirements, including additional work satellites, blast nozzles and ancillary handling devices.
