Tactical radar for US special operations forces aircraft
DRS Technologies, Inc., recently announced today that it had received a $20 million contract from the Space and Airborne Systems division of the Raytheon Company in El Segundo, California, to support the initial phase of the new Silent Knight Tactical Radar program. The program will support the rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft of the US special operations command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
The work will be accomplished by the company's DRS Sustainment Systems unit in St Louis, Missouri, which will provide crucial and patented radar technology for the Raytheon-led team. The company's technology will help the team develop a common, multi-mode radar system that includes terrain- following and terrain-avoidance, navigation, ground map and weather mode capabilities to assist special operations forces safely enter and exit dangerous areas at night while flying at a low altitude. In addition to this special technology, DRS will provide other services and equipment during the design and development process.
The lead aircraft to receive this new radar will be the MH-47G Chinook. Eventually, it will be fielded on the MH-60M Black Hawk, MC-130H Combat Talon and CV22 Block 30 Osprey aircraft.
