Article Type: University and research news From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 5

Cranfield University recently announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SIM University (UniSIM) of Singapore. Cranfield will assist with the development and delivery of UniSIM’s new Aerospace Systems Engineering degree programme.

This programme is the first broad-based aerospace degree programme to be offered in Asia Pacific, which aims to help aerospace employees upgrade existing skills with diploma qualifications enabling them to assume management positions. It is also targeted at other professionals seeking a career in aerospace.

In addition to providing academic expertise to develop courses, Cranfield will also host a one-week full-time compulsory primer course in the UK for students in their third semester of the programme. The partnership will also explore opportunities to offer a dual degree which combines an undergraduate degree from UniSIM and a Master’s degree from Cranfield to students who achieve exceptional results.

Professor Minoo Patel, Head of School of Engineering at Cranfield University said: “We are pleased to be partnering with UniSIM. Our collaboration is highly appropriate due to the shared interest of both institutions in continuing professional development, particularly in Aerospace Engineering and management.”

UniSIM President, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat said: “The programme is built upon a co-operation of local and foreign Institutes of Higher Learning including UniSIM, Singapore Polytechnic and Cranfield University in the UK as well as key players in the Singapore Aerospace industry through the Singapore Technologies Aerospace and Association of Aerospace Industries Singapore. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will put on paper the important roles each institution plays in making the programme possible and their strategic contributions will help to position the programme to meet the manpower demands of Singapore’s Aerospace Industry.”

Professor Sir John O’Reilly, Vice-Chancellor, Cranfield University commented: “Cranfield University and UniSIM share a focus of helping students to become and to remain competitive in the market. We share a commitment to continuing professional development and meeting the needs of employers. This new collaboration draws mutually beneficial synergies from both institutions and we look forward to this new partnership.”
