Recently, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that it would be recruiting new talent for its future manned missions to the International Space Station, the moon and beyond. This announcement offers potential candidates the opportunity to develop their careers in this exciting and promising area. The requirements for a career in space according to ESA are a background in relevant scientific disciplines including engineering.

Cranfield University reports that it offering a number of postgraduate degrees that allow for the possibility of pursuing this intriguing career option including the Astronautics and Space Engineering MSC which was established in 1987 to meet the requirement of the space industry for high-quality employees with relevant skills. This course offers students an intense and fascinating experience giving them expert knowledge and training to be competitive in a highly specialised industry.

Currently, Cranfield has over 400 alumni from its MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering, working throughout the space industry in Europe. The course has strong industry involvement and is well-respected with key UK space companies regularly recruiting its graduates. Research groups at Cranfield are involved with major international astronomy missions and are helping the UK to play an important role in future Mars exploration. Cranfield also has a research programme in manned spaceflight.
