Special Issue on Leadership and sustainability

Due date: 1 November, 2006Guest Editor: Ellen Van Velsor, PhD, Center for Creative Leadership

Sustainability is an agenda that asks business organizations to pay equal attention to economic, social (CSR), and environmental factors, fully embracing the concepts of political, civil, social, economic, cultural, and human rights; advocating the premise that all human values depend on a healthy ecological, social, and economic context. While the above statement establishes the "what" of sustainability, it does little to inform leaders and organizations on "how" to effectively implement the "triple bottom line" of sustainability. Many organizations are finding leadership to be a challenge, in terms of developing workable strategies, redesigning organizational systems and processes, and/or forging required culture change. This special issue will focus on the unique challenges to leadership and organizational capacity when implementing broad strategies of sustainability or CSR principles specifically. Those aspects include, but would not be limited to, a focus on the developmental experiences of sustainabilily/CSR leaders, how leaders enact the tasks of leadership in organizations pursuing sustainability, what organizational systems and processes promote successful implementation of a sustainability/CSR agenda, and how organizations develop capacity to deal with sustainability processes and issues. Both theoretical and empirical papers are welcome.
