Orbotech announces new series of AOI systems

Keywords Automated optical inspection, Orbotech

Orbotech Ltd has launched its newest automated optical inspection (AOI) system for printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing applications the InSpire-9000 Series after successful beta site testing at several leading manufacturing facilities worldwide.

The InSpire-9000 Series is an integrated AOI system with a conveyorised, modular design which the manufacturers claim provides the lowest AOI operation costs and the highest return on investment for high volume, mainstream production.

The new system provides unattended operation from panel loading through unloading, cutting down on operator resources and reducing handling defects by eliminating manual loading/unloading. A single operator can efficiently run multiple systems simultaneously. The system's automated operation, combined with a unique single scan line approach, also results in extremely fast scan speeds of up to 210 sides per hour on an 18in. × 24in. panel. For maximum flexibility, customers may either opt for Orbotech's integrated automation solution, or select individual automation modules compatible with the InSpire-9000 Series, available from both Orbotech and third party suppliers.

The series employs pioneering colour image acquisition to take advantage of the valuable information provided by a panel's colour characteristics. Utilising this detailed information for defect detection, the InSpire-9000 Series can significantly reduce false calls and ensure accurate classification even when dealing with the most challenging jobs, such as oxidized copper surfaces, multiple metal designs, or low-contrast materials. In addition, the resulting low false call rate contributes to reducing labour requirements associated with defect verification.

An integral component is the powerful image processor, which runs advanced morphological algorithms, implemented by ASICs, custom designed by Orbotech engineers. This results in rapid, highly accurate data analysis.

With few moving parts and electronic components, the InSpire-9000 Series features high reliability with minimum maintenance. Remote diagnostic capabilities are included to ensure rapid on-line support.
