Probetest Systems Ltd, the flying probe specialist formed 18 months ago, launched its new Dragonfly fixtureless bare board test system at the IPC exhibition.

The Dragonfly is an original design from Probetest's expert engineers, with performance and accuracy as the primary development factors. It utilises new generation motion and control technologies and powerful multi-tasking operating software, which offer consistently high throughput rates within an extremely easy-to-use design.

The machine features eight independent probes with robust 3-phase linear motors and air bearings. It achieves test speeds typically exceeding 27 tests per second, depending on the PCB, and also sets new standards of accuracy by offering an impressive X & Y positional resolution of just 1 micron. A High Accuracy option improves this still further, to an amazing 0.1 micron, or 100 nanometers.

The system uses a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0TM operator interface, which simplifies control and operation, and provides industry-standard networking protocols. Netlist extraction is automated from CAD systems, Gerber front end systems, IPC-D-356A data or via a user configurable converter for a variety of data formats.

Other important attributes in test process automation include auto-alignment with pattern recognition and vision, software-mapped calibration routines and system self-test and verification. In addition, simple board loading and conveyoring is fitted as standard. Automatic board edge clamping secures the test subject without operator intervention to further improve throughput and test consistency.

A number of Dragonfly system options are already available from Probetest. Manufacturers needing to test isolation can use the High Voltage measurement option which provides up to 500V. Additional IEEE488.2 instrumentation can be integrated for high accuracy Kelvin component value measurements and to validate buried components.
