Shipley Company has announced that it has increased its presence in the important South Korean semiconductor market by acquiring the 49 percent of its Korean joint venture which it does not already own.

Shipley's former joint venture with LG Chemical, which was formed in January 1998, provides photoresists and other specialty chemicals to manufacturers of computer chips and other high-tech devices. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"LG Chemical has been a strong partner for Shipley Company in creating a key supplier for the Korean electronics market", said Pierre R. Brondeau, president and chief executive officer of Shipley Company. "As Asia's electronics market benefits from the renewed strength of the region's economies, Shipley is well positioned to capitalize on that growth."

Following the June 1999 completion of Rohm and Haas's acquisition of Morton International, Inc. the company's electronic materials businesses will surpass the $1 billion mark in combined annual sales. Much of the growth required to reach this milestone results from a string of recent purchases: in January Rohm and Haas completed the acquisition of LeaRonal, Inc., a global supplier of specialty metallisation chemistries to producers of printed wiring boards. Also in January, Rohm and Haas increased its ownership stake in Rodel, Inc., a global supplier of slurries and pads for chemical mechanical planarization, to 48 percent.
