Sigtronics, a Scottish hi-tech start-up based in Livingston, has won a large research grant, worth £380,000, to advance their printed circuit board prototyping system. Awarded through the Scottish Executive Spurplus program, the grant will assist in the development of their new laser-based system for the production of primed circuit boards, the core component of electronic products.

Sigtronics has successfully developed the first version of their prototyping system using precision drilling and materials technology. The grant will allow the transfer of this process to higher volume and multi-layer applications.

"Developing a laser version of our QuickboardTM machine takes us out of the pure prototyping space and into low volume production applications", said Bill Matthews, chief executive of Sigtronics. "Together with our existing QuickboardTM machine, we will now be able to provide solutions that suit a wide range of PCB requirements in the time critical phases of a new product".

"This endorsement from the government is a great achievement for our R&D team", added Godwin Osigwe, founder and now chief technical officer of the company. "The original QuickboardTM machine is now entering the beta site phase with customers and the Spurplus grant provides us with a great platform to take the technology to the next level".

The Quickboard was launched at the European PCB Convention in Maastricht.
