Viewpoint: The catholic work ethic

Abstract

Industry in some parts of the world is under much attack from Japan. In consequence many people have been seeking to learn lessons from the Japanese; some companies have even sought to adopt their management techniques as the panacea that will transform them into lean and mean competitors. But vital issues can be ignored in a rush to save local industry by the importation of Japanese techniques.
