RB.211 Engine Development
Abstract
EXCELLENT progress is being made with the development of the 50 000 lb thrust Rolls‐Royce RB.211–524 engine. This engine gives 19 per cent more take‐off thrust than RB.211s which entered service in 1972 powering medium‐range Lockheed TriStar airliners. A bench development RB.211–524 engine recently completed a 150‐hour endurance test at the turbine entry temperature required for its airworthiness certification at 50 000 lb take‐off thrust. Subsequent inspection of the engine showed that the critical hot end components were in excellent condition.
