Abstract

The Printed Circuit Industry is NOT in a mess, no thanks to some of the people in it and some of the industry's news media. Over the past few years all kinds of degrading concessions, statements, letters and articles have appeared in various newspapers and journals, thus clearly indicating that, despite popular belief to the contrary, news media which carried such disparagements show a complete lack of responsibility within the industry which supports them. Perhaps it boosts their circulation figures, or they feel good about running their industry down; or it is the only way they can get their views into print. However that may be, it is clear that they do not take their constitutional responsibilities sufficiently seriously. Of course, the news media could help considerably by avoiding sensationalism by checking accuracy or validity before publication, and by developing a better sense of responsibility. For example, there is no row within the industry—only a move towards unification. Again the industry is not ailing—a few companies have gone to the wall because of the effects of the deep recession combined with poor management but they are the exception and not the rule. So why is it not recognised that to generalise from the particular simply courts disaster by producing the wrong conclusion?
